Description

(DM)Diversity & Multiculturalism

This course examines historical and cultural influences on families and the origin and development of gender in the family and other areas of social life. The class explores how various institutions in society, such as public policy, the economy, the education system and culture, reflect, reinforce or alter family and gender patterns. It discusses gender and gender identities and the intersections of age, class, gender, ethnicity, race, and sexuality in family life. It analyzes the historical shifts we have seen in family formations and examines the contributions of the women's and LGBTQ+ movements to ways of thinking about gender inequality.
