This course examines race and ethnicity from a sociological perspective. Race and ethnicity are socially constructed concepts, but what does that really mean? How does race and ethnicity affect the life chances of individuals? Why is society stratified by race and ethnicity? Why have some groups moved up the hierarchy, while other groups have remained at the bottom? What impact has immigration had on race relations in the United States? What affect do various institutions, particularly the criminal justice, social service, and legal systems have on maintaining the racial and ethnic stratification in our society? How do these systems reflect and reinforce differences by along racial and ethnic lines.
