In a globalized political system, states' ability to use statecraft is effected by the condition of the international system and the structure of alliance membership. The current Eurozone crisis that has at its epicenter the southern Mediterranean littoral states of Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain (PIGS) presents interesting dimensions of statecraft that states practice within institutional arrangements such as the European Union and NATO, at a time of economic crisis.
