Description

(SJ) Social Justice

Health impacts the development and stability of countries and therefore the economy, security, and peace globally. This course will compare how different countries address the political challenges of healthcare including the intersection of cultural aspects of care with factors such as sex, gender, race, and religion. Through case studies and policy analysis we will study how countries around the world differ on these issues and how governmental and international institutions can address them. Case studies used will include the politics of HIV, Covid, contaminated water, vaccinations, and Ebola. We will examine how governments and international institutions engage with global and public health inequities. At a time of increased migration due to environmental stress and violence it is governments that make the policies that await the newcomer. We will study the complex politics between richer and poorer countries and between private and public access to pharmaceuticals and therapies.
