Description

(NS) Natural Science (SI) Scientific Inquiry

This course provides an introduction to the science of sustainability and to selected issues in sustainable development. Topics covered will be of major relevance to sustainability and may include, but are not limited to, (1) deforestation, (2) urbanization, and (3) depletion of marine resources. For each topic, we will study a geographical region as a case study. We will examine the causes of these processes and their effects on people and the environment from a scientific viewpoint. Proposals for sustainable solutions to the problems will also be evaluated scientifically. Students will perform their own case study to apply the concepts learned in the course. Students taking the travel component will make a case study of the country visited based on their own field observations and will need to register for PHYS 2411 and PHYS L2411.
