Description

This course examines Latin America through selected themes that shaped contours of the region's history. They include colonialism, utopianism, modernity, transnational identities, cultural diffusion, migration, and revolution. Course readings and class discussions will focus on the relationship between the region known as Latin America and the rest of the world. To this end, we will explore ideas, commerce, and perceptions that traveled along this trajectory - ida y vuelta. The period covered spans the colonial period to the present day and considers thematic intersections as they relate to Latin American emigration to the United States and Europe in the 20th century.
