Description

(HI) Historical Inquiry (H) Historical Consciousness

This survey course examines the major political, social and economic developments of the United States since the Civil War by exploring the central ideas and conflicts that shaped American society to the end of the twentieth century. Major themes include industrialization; territorial expansion; urbanization; international relations and conflicts; the struggle for civil rights; and the broader quest for social change since the Civil War. The lives, experiences, and contributions of marginalized peoples and groups are examined and connected to the present. The goal of this course is to make students to think and critically write about the history of the United States, getting them to challenge some of the broad-based and popularly held assumptions about American history. The successful student will recognize ways in which conflicts, innovations and changing ideas have shaped American society.
