Description

This course is a continuation of CHEM2101 and considers the structure, bonding and reactivity of the following classes of carbon compounds: alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid derivatives, and aromatic compounds. Particular attention will be paid to multi-step synthesis of target molecules from readily available starting materials. The laboratory sessions focus on the synthesis, purification (utilizing techniques learned in the first semester) and identification of organic compunds using spectrometric techniques. Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory.
