Description

This course will introduce students to biotechnology-based research, development, and commercialization using real world case studies. These topics may include recombinant DNA- and RNA-based technologies, protein-based pharmaceuticals, the application of antibodies, genome editing, and agritech. Case studies from these themes will be selected to illustrate both core biotechnology concepts and details on how the science was commercialized. In doing so we will consider: What was the biotechnology? How was the research performed, tested for safety, and scaled? What was the market for the discovery/product? What challenges, including legal frameworks, were faced in creating a business around the scientific finding? How did ethics and social justice factor into the discovery/product research, development, and commercialization?
