Description

Biology is a dynamic discipline fueled by rapidly available technology and data acquisition, which can make it difficult to bring its greatest challenges into focus. This course aims to describe and analyze a current and emerging field in Biology based on the instructor's expertise. Grand challenges in Biology will be addressed (e.g. health and disease, biodiversity and conservation, environmental change), with a focus towards recognizing misinformation, synthesizing empirical evidence, and communicating effective solutions. A variety of class readings will be used as a basis for class discussion, short papers, and oral presentations. Students are encouraged to view the challenges of modern biology from scientific, social, and ethical viewpoints. A travel component may be included depending on the instructor and course content.
